North America & Pelican nebulae
NGC 7000 / Caldwell 2 & IC 5070 & IC 5067
The North America Nebula is huge; when viewed from Earth it is over 10 times the area of the full Moon. The actual diamater is about 90 light-years and our distance from it is around 2,590 light-years.
The dark boundary area is an interstellar dust cloud! There are over 5,000 stars in this picture, but the star that is actually responsible for radiating this whole region is hiding behind that dust cloud.
Technical details
This picture is a mosaic of 2 panels and we are hoping to extend it further yet. All of these frames were shot under less than ideal circumstances. Temperature was around 15°C, relative humidity 90%.
